Song Description

Song Analysis

Despite being not provided a genre description, NEON 1989 is a textbook example of city pop music. City pop is a genre that is currently popular around some music aficionados around the world; a style of pop music originated from YUKIKA's home country of Japan which blends pop music with synth, funk, jazz, and contemporary genres. In YUKIKA's words, she described her musical genre as "Newtro," a portmanteau of "New" and "Retro." Newtro itself is also currently popular in South Korea; not only as a musical genre, but more of a cultural movement of blending retro aesthetics into the modern era.

NEON 1989 starts with a melancholic intro followed by a steady, rhythmical melody that evokes sophistication and nostalgia of 80's Japanese music. ESTi, who owns and runs ESTIMATE, lent his style of music with a remix. He didn't drastically change OREO's original composition, but only adds a bit of flair to the music. ESTi added a more sentimental synth intro, a bit more layer into the beats with leads and fanfares, and barely speeding up the song.

Background Animation

The background animation, or rather background video, is simply just a condensed version of YUKIKA's NEON music video. Due to the shortened length of the music, a big part of it had to be cut off. The background video starts with a record that spins YUKIKA's song, which then cuts to a series of clips. These clips show recorded footage of YUKIKA performing on stage, dancing in an 80's style room, and sitting around seemingly waiting for something. Reaching the end of the video, the scenery changed into a rooftop parking lot at night, where YUKIKA who now dons a black dress and jacket, dancing around a neon sign that reads "I JUST WANNA BE ALONE" and a cream-yellow sports car that is presumably a Porsche 944.

YUKIKA's NEON Liner Notes

Short Version

Original Romanized
차가운 공기가 번지고
고요함에 익숙해지면
엉켜있는 그때 기억이
비워질까 사라질까

I just wanna be alone

Can’t take my eyes off you
기나긴 밤속에 네온
Can’t take my eyes off you

Trivia

  • The original title of NEON 1989 is just simply NEON. The added 1989 is likely a reference to the year on the recorded footage.
    • Currently, there's no actual reason given on the name differences.
  • The original music video gave more context on YUKIKA's singing and dancing clips. The spinning record on the intro is played by a young man who is seemingly infatuated by YUKIKA's singing and persona. He suddenly runs outside, trying to find YUKIKA who seemed to be a person only existed in the past. But as he reached the rooftop parking lot, he actually saw YUKIKA in the flesh, confirming that she's indeed real.
    • The recorded footage shows that YUKIKA's footage is recorded on February 22nd, 1989. On the ending of the original music video, the date shifts forward to the exact same date, but in the year 2019.
    • Coincidentally, February 22nd is the actual release date of NEON music video.
